The legendary Porsche 917K endurance racing car gave the Stuttgart-based manufacturer the first two of their 19 overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. Initially powered by a 4.5-litre flat-12 engine, the 917K of the time could accelerate from 0-62mph (100 km/h) in under 3 seconds and achieve a top speed of over 220mph (354 km/h).
The all-conquering 917K became one of the most iconic sports racing cars of all time and spawned several variants. With its high power and blistering speeds, it was further elevated by a starring role in Steve McQueen’s 1971 film Le Mans.
Depicting the car flat-out on the Mulsanne Straight in 1970, this beautiful sculpture from Gregory Percival pays tribute not only to the awesome Porsche 917K and Steve McQueen but also the real Le Mans drivers.
The result of two months of work on the original sculpture, the recent addition of a ‘wake’ of resin glass took a further week and we think it really gives the Porsche extra dynamism.
Available in either polished silver plate or patinated bronze to represent the effects of 24 hours of hard driving around the Circuit de la Sarthe, each version is limited to 10 examples and will be individually numbered and signed by the artist.
